Propolis – some swear by it, others have never heard of it or consider it charlatanism. The bee putty resin is a proven and natural remedy against bacteria and fungi, which can be used against a wide range of complaints. From the aphes in the mouth to the strengthening of the immune system, the natural remedy should be able to provide relief for various problems.
1. What is Propolis?
The natural substance is a mixture of different ingredients made by bees. The composition can vary greatly. In the hive, this substance fulfils an important function, because it works:
Bees use them to kill microorganisms – in other words, to disinfect their habitat and prevent disease. For this reason, for example, foreign bodies, bee faeces and other debris entered in the hive as well as the honeycombs for rearing the offspring are coated with a wafer-thin propolis film. In particular, bee faeces are neutralized.
Since the benefits of the liquid do not only relate to bees and the hive, but are also usable for humans, it is also used in alternative medicine.
2. How does Propolis work?
The substance produced by bees is said to be able to kill viruses, bacteria and fungal spores. However, it is far from clear how exactly the effect on humans will be. The liquid to resinous mixture consists of:
- Natural resin
- Pollen balm
- essential oils
- Ferments (saliva secretions of bees)
These ingredients in turn consist, among other things, of flavonoids. These include, for example,
- Pinobanksin acetate
Other substances are also included, such as rubber, polysaccharides and phenols. Among the phenols are, for example, cumaric acid, ferulaic acid, isoferulaic acid coffee acid and cinnamon acid as well as their esters.
Due to the antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects of the putty resin, it works, among other things:
- against inflammation of the skin
- for abscesses and furuncles
- against aphths and other inflammations of the oral mucosa
- in case of feverish infections
- against swelling
- for respiratory catarrh
- Propolis can help with cold
Due to the different composition of the bee resin, the effects are also varied. In general, however, the drug acts as a “bioantibiotic”. In addition, it is astringent, choleric, granulation-promoting local anaesthetic and spasmolytic.
Astringent: The technical term means nothing more than “pulling together”. Wounds can be closed on the skin or mucous membrane and an anti-inflammatory effect can be achieved.
Choleretic: The bile flow is promoted and the production of bile is stimulated. This can positively affect digestion.
Granulation promotes: Granulation involves the formation of new, temporary tissue on wounds. It is therefore an intermediate step in wound healing, which serves to close, for example, abrasive and cut wounds. Due to the beneficial effect of bee resin, such injuries can be closed and healed more quickly.
Local anaesthetic: The numbing effect can be very pleasant for pain and swelling, especially on mucous membranes, and can cause rapid relief.
Spasmolytic: The medical term “spasmolytic” means antispasm. This effect should also be of the bees’ putty resin.
3. Which propolis is the best?
Who wants to buy Propolis, has many possibilities: Propolis capsules, Propolis cream, Propolis powder, Propolis ointment, Propolis drops or rather Propolis tincture? There is no blanket answer to this. The form in which the bee resin is used depends primarily on the complaints.
In the composition of the active ingredients, the highest possible concentrations of the active ingredients are of course advantageous. In addition, the bee resin with a base made of poplar is a good choice, as has been scientifically proven.
Propolis Capsules: In capsule form, the bee resin can be conveniently used for internal use. This is useful, for example, if propolis is to be used for a cold or as an immune cure.
Propolis cream: The cream can be useful for external use in case of wounds, insect bites or rashes. It is easy to apply and contains other nourishing ingredients that can contribute to healing.
Propolis powder: Dried bee resin, which has been processed into powder, can be used in many ways. Diluted with water or applied directly, the powder can be used, for example, on skin, mucous membrane or for internal use. In addition, the dosage can be adjusted very precisely. Taken as a solution or used for gurgling, it can help, for example, with sore throats and other cold swells. Propolis powder can also be used as an immunotherapy.
Propolis ointment: Unlike Propolis cream, the ointment is firmer and in consistency and therefore holds better on the skin. However, it is also intended for external use only and should therefore only be applied to the skin and not to mucous membranes.
Propolis tincture: The propolis tincture is specially designed for mucous membranes and can therefore be wonderfully averted, for example, in case of inflammation in the oral cavity. It is numbing pain and inhibiting inflammation by killing bacteria and viruses. Since it also has a killing effect on fungi and can destroy their spores, it can also be used on nails and skin. However, it is not intended for ingestion, but should usually only be used selectively.
Propolis drops: As an immunocurean, for cold scolding or for digestive problems, the drops can be taken in the specified amount. Due to the antispasmodic and strengthening effect, they are also suitable for children.
Propolis in honey: In the form of honey, the bee resin also serves as a strengthening for the immune system and can develop the various health-promoting effects. In addition, it is not conspicuous in honey in terms of taste and is therefore also accepted by children gladly and without any problems.
4. What complaints does Propolis help against?
How propolis use should turn out for complaints depends mainly on four factors:
- Type of complaints
- Form of bee resin
- Information from the manufacturer
In the case of a cold or cold, a different form of use is of course required than an aphte on the oral mucosa or a cut wound on the hand. Also in the case of an immunotreatment cure for the prevention of diseases, care should be taken to observe the manufacturer’s instructions. In general, however, the following applies to the stakes: as much as necessary, as little as possible. The propolis effect should not be underestimated. In individual cases, this means strictly complying with the manufacturer’s specifications.
4.1 for colds & sore throats
In the case of colds, a flushing of the nasal mucosa with diluted tincture or dissolved powder can bring relief. It is also possible to take capsules, apply cream or ointment in the nose. As a result, the mucous membrane is cared for, the swelling decreases and breathing becomes easier. The externally applied agents ensure that the inflammation heales faster, pain is relieved and swelling subsides. The internally applied agents, on the other hand, strengthen and support the immune system.
Gurgling with diluted tincture, taking drops and eating propolis honey are ideal when the throat is aching. The honey can also be given in tea. This efficiently moistens the mucous membranes and allows them to do their job again, secrete and thus remove the germs from the body. Even with coughs, it may be useful to take the bee resin and absorb a lot of fluid, as this makes it easier to release stuck mucus and thus also separate.
4.2 for wound healing
Whether cutting or abrasions – in any case, wound healing can be positively influenced by ointment, cream or tincture. It is recommended to apply the product several times a day. This kills germs, pulls the skin together and promotes wound healing.
4.3 for the mucous membranes
Tincture with bee resin can be applied directly to mucous membranes. Due to the astringent effect, open wounds are closed. This speeds up healing. In addition, the – often intense – pain is relieved and thus a rapid
4.4 against convulsions and spasticity
Spasms should also be able to be relieved by the components of bee resin. Therefore, honey and drops are a good variant, if, for example, digestion has to be helped on the jumps. As a tincture or in tea, the agent can also be used.
4.5 for immune strengthening
Capsules, powder and honey can strengthen the body’s defences so that diseases do not occur or that they are lower in severity. However, the dosage depends in any case on the exact type of product and the manufacturer’s specifications.
5. How is Propolis taken or how to dose it?
There can be no blanket answer to this. Firstly, because it is a natural product with different compositions. Secondly, because this depends on the nature of the complaints. It is therefore important in any case to pay attention to the manufacturer’s information and to use the product only as prescribed.
When it comes to shelf life, care should also be taken to ensure that bee resin is very long-lasting in itself, but that the other ingredients can spoil or lose their effectiveness. Whether it is tincture, cream or capsules therefore does not matter at first. The ingredients, ingredients and excipients are important. Even if the putty resin were still effective, it can already be spoiled and have a negative effect on health. This can, for example, cause irritation of the skin or mucous membranes.
It therefore also helps to provide the respective product with the opening date in order to estimate the shelf life and also to store it dry, cool and dark. This ensures that the agents are durable for as long as possible and that no negative effects arise during use. Ideal is often a storage in the refrigerator or in a cupboard, which is exposed to only a few temperature fluctuations.
6. Conclusion: Why is Propolis so healthy?
The propolis effect can be negative if there is a known allergy to any of the ingredients. No intolerances are known in internal use, which is why the drug is described as a “bio-antibiotic” and is considered to be particularly healthy.
It is therefore advisable to first test the agent in the arm bend when applied externally. This can be used to determine whether allergic reactions occur. If redness, itching, swelling or other side effects appear, the remedy should not be used. It is ideal to test the product at least twice, because allergies usually do not occur during first contact, but only show up at the second application at the earliest.
It is also important to wait long enough. At least six hours should be between the test and the application. However, 24 hours is better. If an allergic reaction occurs, the application should be excluded. In an emergency, this test is of course unfavourable. Therefore, when initiating bee resin products, care should be taken to ensure that they are also acceptable to the individual.
However, the total substances considered to be healthy in the bee resin can be assumed to be a helpful natural remedy. Having a corresponding remedy in the home pharmacy can therefore not harm – provided it has been sufficiently tested in advance.
